The project

Objectives

Workpackages

Expected results

The workpackages of the project are:

WP1. Management

The main objective of this work package is to monitor and coordinate all activities within the project to ensure its optimum development. AD-WISE management will include technical coordination and monitoring, deadlines follow-up, controlling quality of the results, communication inside and outside the consortium (reporting), financial follow-up and IPR management.

WP2. Modelling the effect of feed on SVFA concentration

The first step of the project will be the development of the model that will simulate the effect of feed on SVFA concentration (Model 1) and the development of the monitoring system, that includes both the physical measurement system (probe, spectrometer, etc) and the mathematical model to correlate signal with SVFA concentration (Model 2). For the development of Model 1, experimental tests will be run in pilot digesters in AINIA, where the evolution of SVFA will be studied as a function of feed composition and patterns. This evolution will be represented with mathematical equations, and this equations plus the conditions for starting the feed regulation actions will be integrated in Model 1 – AD-Control.

WP3. Development of the monitoring system for measuring concentration of SVFA

For the development of the measurement system, previously fixed requirements of the AD-WISE system will be translated into technical specifications to guide the development of the prototype. Then the hardware part of the system will be designed following these specifications. According to the decided design, the manufacture of the elements will be the next step followed by testing task to ensure the proper operation of every element of the prototype and the whole system. Finally, the SVFAM Model – Model 2 to measure the concentration of SVFA will be built by using a collection of spectra obtained from the biogas pilot plant.

WP4. Integration

Once Model 1, Model 2 and hardware are developed (WP 2 and WP 3), integration work will follow. The main objective of this work package is to integrate the complete monitoring system and to test it at pilot scale. The integrated monitoring prototype will comprise a software application including the AD-Control Model – Model 1 to control biogas plants interacting with the monitoring system developed in WP3 to provide the values of SVFA. To achieve the main objective, the software application will be developed, integrated with the monitoring system based in optical spectroscopy, installed in the pilot plant and tested to evaluate its performance.

WP5. Validation at industrial scale

The developed system will then be validated at industrial scale. The objective is to develop a prototype suitable to be installed in a full scale running biogas plant (Granja San Ramón). The lab prototype developed will be upscaled and adapted to the working conditions of a full scale plant, and its functioning validated during a 4-months period.

WP6. Dissemination and exploitation

Dissemination and exploitation plan related activities are foreseen. The objective of this WP is on the one hand, to disseminate the aims and the results of the project and, on the other, to facilitate access to market for future exploitation of the developed system. For that, several tools will be used and developed, such the website to provide worldwide visibility, and a business plan to support the exploitation of the results, among others.
